ABOUT SHANIQUE WEATHERLY

Shanique Weatherly is a fashion designer who has a bold imagination. She has a passion for color, texture and shapes.  Shanique was born and raised in Buffalo, NY and moved to Brooklyn, NY where she study fashion design at Pratt Institute.  However, before attending Pratt Shanique spent a year in Jacksonville FL, where she was influenced by the bright, colorful atmosphere and weather. After living in Florida, she began to use bold colors in her designs to reflect an outspoken and sexy feeling.
As a fashion designer, Shanique enjoyed working close to the body to create a fit that mimics the form of the female body. However, in  her previous  collection, she was challenged by her professor Melitta Baumeister   to work away from the body. Shanique began to think back to her  roots as a professional jazz dancer and began to think of the movements and shapes that she used when performing—circles, squares, and intricate geometric shapes that captured the expression and attitude in her performance.  These shapes have influenced her work by making her garments abstract and structural. In the process of creating her collection, Shanique  transfer her ideas into her sketches and garments.
For this collection, Shanique created her own category as a resort designer. She used bold shapes to reflect the brazen colors she used in her collection.  Instead of designing commercial resort wear, she design runway resort wear.
While living in New York City she has  interned at Naeem Khan, J Rosen Showroom, and Michael Kors to learn more about the industry and how to be become a successful designer when designing resort wear. When designing resort wear her mission is to think outside the box and allow herself  to become open to creating new, sexy, and bold silhouettes for women.

THE PROCESS

" When creating my sketches, I decided to take the technique of draping that I’ve used when working in patterns and apply it to magazine paper. This direction has allowed my sketches to stand out when presenting my designs to the audience, which was my mission".

REBIRTH COLLECTION SU/SP'15

"Creating shapes influenced my work by making the garments abstract and structural. In the process of creating my collection, I transfer my ideas into making collages".
